India’s Rural Water and Sanitation Revolution: A Look into SBM-G and JJM Progress

🌱 Introduction

India is making remarkable strides in providing safe water supply and sanitation to rural households through flagship schemes like Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The focus remains on:

  • ODF+ Model Villages
  • Drainage & Greywater Management
  • Safe Household Tap Connections (targeting 55 lpcd)

🚿 Drainage & Greywater Management Highlights (SBM-G Phase II)

  • Coverage: 86.43% of villages (5,07,394 of 5,87,045) now have some form of drainage system.
  • Greywater Treatment Methods: Use of soak pits, DEWATS, kitchen gardens, Phytorid systems, etc.
  • System Promotion: Encourages closed drains and small-bore wastewater disposal systems.
  • Achievements:
    • 4.73 lakh villages achieved ODF+ (Model) status, with 3.29 lakh verified.

  • Tripura (99.61%)
  • Uttar Pradesh (97.99%)
  • Telangana (95.96%)
  • Tamil Nadu (94.64%)
  • Rajasthan (94.60%)

💧 Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Progress

  • Launched: August 2019
  • Goal: Provide functional tap water connections to every rural household
  • Target: 55 litres per capita/day of potable water, BIS 10500 compliant
